How much should 94 Honda Accord EX Automatic Transmission and installation cost?

i have a 1994 Honda Accord EX and it needs a new transmission. as of right now the first gear does not work. i took it to a guy i know that is a mechanic for a car dealer, he work on cars on the side at home. he said he'll charge me $1,500 for the new transmission and for the installation. does this sounds fair enough? should i go ahead and have it done? should i go ahead and have him go ahead and start looking for the used transmission? he said that as of right now i should drive the car until it cant be driven and then replace the transmission. just the first gear that doesnt work. Contact a dealer and get them to give you a quote on the cost to do this work with a factory rebuilt trans. Then knock off a minimum of 1/3 and thats the fair price for the job. This guy is going to hunt around for a used trans.... guaranteed its not going to be factory rebuilt used, but something he had pulled from a salvage yard. Unless he will guarantee the replacement unti for 1 year, I'd be leary or buying lead undies.
