How do I shift gears on a 2001 Honda 400ex?

I bought this 2001 Honda 400ex like a week ago but I haven't been able to shift gears without stalling! Any tips or techniques that you do so you don't stall? And do you use the clutch only to go into 1st gear and then the rest is automatic or do you have to use the clutch for all 5 gears? How do I shift gears on a 2001 Honda 400ex?alright, now listen closely.

You're sitting on the quad, its in netrual.

Pull in the clutch (left level on the bars)

Push the shifter DOWN, (left foot) (you're in first gear)

Give it alittle gas and slowly let the clutch out, and the quad will move.

wind it out til you need to shift.

quickly let off the gas and pull in the clutch and pull up on the shifter (you will pull it pass Nertural into 2nd gear)

wind it out again

again quick let off gas, cltuch and shift

repeat

repeat

repeat (you don't have to hit 5th gear, but you can.)

Then to downshift, let off the gas and pull the clutch and push down on the shifter.

So yes, every time you move that shifter, you should have the clutch in. EVERY TIME, you will probably mess up your engine, but thats called power shifting.

by the way.... if you think about it your gearing pattern is

5th

4th

3rd

2nd

Nertural

1st.

just remember that and have fun!

Ride honda!!!How do I shift gears on a 2001 Honda 400ex?once the engine starts hitting high rpms stop giving it gas, pull in and hold the clutch, shift up, let go of the clutch and then give it gas, just practice shifting slowly untill you get the hang of it, and you do this this for ALL gearsHow do I shift gears on a 2001 Honda 400ex?to shift gears you let off the gas a little pull in the clutch pull up on the shifter then let out on the clutch and give it the gas. you should be all set. and yes you need to do this for all five gears.
