30 years ago oil was pretty much oil. Not any more. Besides viscosity differences (5W-30, for example) motor oil is available in a range of API certification levels. We normally think of those as being like "revision levels" with the latest being best, and for your 2008 Civic that is true. Some older cars will batter themselves to death if the latest API SM oil is used because it contains little ZDDP (see first source), but if you put the same API SG oil they use in your car it will cause premature failure of the very expensive catalytic converter.
I am concerned about the "very cheap" oil. There is API SA (actually, unrated) oil around that must not be used in your engine under any but the most dire emergency conditions. It is very cheap indeed and is very bad - see the second source.
Finally, there is a lot of debate about the value of synthetic oils (which are not cheap) versus conventional oil. Synthetics have a clear edge in two conditions - extreme cold (third source) and when deposits in throttle bodies are a big problem. Honda throttle bodies rarely have much trouble with deposits (formed when oil mist from the crankcase is breathed in) but I have had enough grief from deposits over the years that I switched all my cars to synthetic a few years ago. Synthetic blends are also a good compromise. Contrary to rumors, conventional and synthetic can be switched at any time and can even be mixed... that is what the blends are.
The short of it is that if the oil he used is API SM, it is good enough until the next scheduled oil change. If it is API SL or earlier, it is probably okay this one time. If it is API SA it should be changed as soon as possible. In Denver you will want to have a synthetic oil or synthetic blend for the winter, but conventional oil is okay for summer. What kind of oil to use for Honda 2008 civic car?well the car comes calling for 5w20 in most areas....depends on temp and such......but ur brother is correct......u can use pretty much any certified motor oil.......but the better the quality and the more correct the weight to conditions the longer ur car will last and the better it will perform....
** if u are under 75k miles i would suggest using synthetic oil .....but after u switch u cannot go back to conventional oil.....so will need to use synthetic forever.....
would recommend using 5w20 unless u live in really cold area......like under 20掳 F then its 0w20...
now if ur over 50k miles u can switch to 5w 30 or even 10 w 30 depending on how car acts....
