What is causing my 1987 Honda Civic not to idle properly?

I drive a 1987 Honda Civic, the 1.5L engine (carbureted). The car won't idle very long at all. When i start it i have to give it some gas to keep it running. I also have to press the gas when I use the brakes to come to a stop, or it dies then as well. Any ideas on what I should have checked first? What is causing my 1987 Honda Civic not to idle properly?Check for rotten vacuum lines first. What is causing my 1987 Honda Civic not to idle properly?1 vacuum leaks..there r many little black rubber hoses that last about 10 yrs....with car running spray with wd 40 [non flammable] and when idle changes.its sucking the WD 40

2 carb..1087 ws peak pollution control time,,you should be able to adjust idle screw,,there may also be adjustment on thrpttle [gas] cable

3 actual timing .idk if distruberer,,ie cap and rotor..all this i assUme its tuned up

4 at that age im sure you've replaced the timing belt several tumes...What is causing my 1987 Honda Civic not to idle properly?A common prob on the '86's was the carb base plate would crack and allow air in.

You can use the wd-40 spray test there too.

Sometimes it only needs torquing of the nuts so try that first. Find correct torque, duno if there's a pattern specified. What is causing my 1987 Honda Civic not to idle properly?
sorry to say first thing is its an 87 honda, try the idle circuit in the carburater or the ide is set to low
