Between a 500 and 750 engine.
Doesn't have to be by Honda. What bike is equally as good today when compared to the 1970 Honda CB750?Nice bike, but honestly any bike today is better. With 39 years more development, today's bikes are more reliable, easier to maintain (fex. how do you like the CB's "manual" automatic cam chain adjuster ?), they have better suspension (fork "stiction" doesn't exist anymore), they handle MUCH better, and the brakes are simply not comparable. Compared to a modern braking system, the CB750's single disc/drum set-up is weak and wooden and very prone to fade, to say nothing of it's nearly non-existent wet-weather performance. In fact, braking is the area where the improvements of the last decades have been the most remarkable.
Look, I love my own '76 CB400F, but it is not in any way comparable to a modern bike. The same is true of a '70 CB750.
Here's a selection of modern mid-size bikes that are built for the same kind of do-it-all usage as the old CB750:
Honda VFR800
Kawasaki KZ750
Suzuki Bandit 650
Suzuki SV650
Honda 599 (aka Hornet)
Suzuki V-Strom 650
Hyosung GT650
Triumph Bonneville and T100
Yamaha FZ6.
The Suzuki Bandit is the closest in specs to the CB, but you wouldn't believe how much better it is.What bike is equally as good today when compared to the 1970 Honda CB750?
There isn't a bike today that can compare to the early Honda 750s. That bike was the pioneer/prototype for almost every bike on the road today. And each and every one of them is 10 times the bike that the early Hondas were.
If you were to but this bike up against any 600cc modern bike it would lose. But in it's day it was the bike to beat. I used to ride with people that had 750 Hondas on my British bike. I could stay with them in the twisty bits but when we hit the straights they were long gone. What bike is equally as good today when compared to the 1970 Honda CB750?There are a ton of upright naked bikes out there. The original Honda 750 is an icon. What bike is equally as good today when compared to the 1970 Honda CB750?
Kawasaki Ninja 500.
that and everthing else, has better brakes, more horsepower and better suspension.
The CB750 was cutting edge 40 years ago..Everything built today is bettter in the 500-750 class. What bike is equally as good today when compared to the 1970 Honda CB750?In comparing todays bikes with the bikes from the 70's you are comparing apples and oranges. Both fruits, yes, but todays bikes are more reliable, comfortable, powerful, better handling, braking etc. All areas of the motorcycle have made enourmous strides since the 70's. I know, I started riding back then and still have an old 1970 Yamaha tucked away in the back of the shop. Every now and again I get the old bike out to ride and come back feeling like I had just ridden a brick, as compared to todays, seats, suspension, engines and tires and all.
