I own a 97 base automatic honda prelude and I like it alot. But I now crave a manual because its more fun and you feel more in control. Well just out of curiosity how much more fuel efficient is the manual then the automatic? and how much faster is it? I don't race, I am just a daily driver, and do you think I should have gotten the manual instead? How much more fuel efficient is a manual honda prelude then an automatic honda prelude?A manual is only a few mpg better than an automatic due to parasitic drag through the transmission. UNLESS the driver wants to race around all day.
Same thing goes for how "fast" it is. But if you have no idea how to race with a manual, its actually slower. Kind of like those kids that think double clutching is good for racing. FYI, it's only good on the down shift. This would only apply in a road course or autocross, and not many people do that on a daily basis.
The automatic is better for you. Plus you can still talk on the phone, drink coffee, and play with the radio without having to worry about shifting.
Also go to a drag strip, all the high horsepower, serious racers have automatics to prevent any operator error so they can win a race. How much more fuel efficient is a manual honda prelude then an automatic honda prelude?
Hi,
I don't think that the rated MPG will change by more than 1-2 MPG. Not enough to be worth getting rid of a good working car and buy one that might not be working as well.
Then there is the problems of buying a new clutch every so many miles. Normally it will last about 80,000 miles, but an in-experienced person can wear one out in a couple of weeks.
Try not applying a lot of power until the clutch is out all the way, and this will prolong it's life many more miles.
The advantage of a automatic is they are much better when in bumper to bumper traffic, or if you need to start out on hills often. The torque converter offers the ability to rev up the engine and provide more horsepower while in first gear at a very low speed.
MPG is not enough justification to buy another car. But driving fun is a good reason to replace a boring car with one that will provide more smile. Many times the automatic will get the same MPG rating as the automatic, sometimes 1 MPG higher.
Good Luck! How much more fuel efficient is a manual honda prelude then an automatic honda prelude? Its pretty much the same. Its probably going to have 1-3 better mpg, so not THAT big. Its probably going to shift faster because you're doing it manually. I honestly think automatic is way more convenient for daily driving but if you prefer a manual go ahead and look for one. Theres not really a HUGE difference but automatic is more convenient just for normal driving. How much more fuel efficient is a manual honda prelude then an automatic honda prelude?
yes its is more fuel efficient and you should have got the manual IMOHow much more fuel efficient is a manual honda prelude then an automatic honda prelude?A manual transmission depends on the driver for gas mileage. If you shift at low RPM's then you will get better gas mileage (maybe 1-3 max) then you would with an automatic. However, if your a harsher driver and you like to climb higher up the RPM range before shifting, you will get worse mpg. This is the beauty of a manual transmission, you get to choose when the car shifts, which means your in control of the power and thus the mpg you get. For a daily driver, it wouldn't really make a difference, the manual prelude is a second faster 0-60 time. However with the manual model, you get the super handling (SH) which is achieved by a system called ATTS (Active torque transfer system) which really makes the SH stand out from the base because it transfers torque allowing the car to handle much better around turns.
Should you have gotten a manual? yes. and i'll tell you why. The 97-01 Preludes all have the "Tip tronic" transmission meaning you have a mode where you can control the shifting (Sort of like a manual) but this was a first for Honda, and it proved to be a bad start. The 97-01 preludes all have faulty automatic transmissions, Honda knows this but so far has only issued an extended warranty on 99-01 models for up to 100,000 miles i believe. Problem is this wasn't issued till very late, and most prelude owners were already past 100,000 miles and it excluded the 97-98 owners (i am actually an owner of a 98). Let me tell you that although i love my auto 98 prelude, she is on her 3rd, yes 3RD transmission already. I love this car, so i keep on repairing the transmission (and thank god for warranties) but it really is a pain since a rebuilt transmission will cost the average person around $2000-$2600 because of the tip tronic and the way its built and it often means going 1-2 weeks without your car. So, expect your transmission to let go one day, and be ready to have it rebuilt, and if you do just get a good warranty (at least a 2 year warranty) or you can always swap in a 5 speed manual transmission (Which has been done many many times). I am actually a part of a prelude owners club so we see a lot of automatic preludes with the failing transmission ,id say 7 of every 10 auto prelude owners in the club have had a "major" problem with their transmission.
if you really want to enjoy the prelude and you CAN drive manual and it seems like you want one, then sell your automatic, buy a manual and go on enjoying one!
